Forklift Safety

OSHA defines a powered industrial truck as a mobile, power-propelled truck that is used to
carry, push, pull, lift, stack or tier materials. Most everyone else knows these type of trucks
as forklifts. Powered industrial trucks do not include earth moving machines or over-the-road
hauling vehicles.

Powered industrial trucks are the cause of thousands of injuries and nearly 100 deaths
per year. In response, OSHA developed the Powered Industrial Truck Standard 29 CFR
1910.178 for general industry. The standard requires employers to train operators
concerning operation instructions, features of specific forklifts, safety concerns and
workplace conditions. Employees may only operate the classification of truck that they have
been trained to operate. The operators must also demonstrate proficiency in performing
duties. Employers must have a forklift safety program implemented to aid in reducing
hazards. While hazards cannot be completely eliminated, they can be minimized.

Forklifts are available in a number of classifications. Each classification is manufactured
for different tasks that may be needed. These classes of powered industrial trucks were
established because they each have different handling and safety characteristics. It is
important that employees understand the specific type of vehicle they will be operating.

The trucks must be inspected on a regular basis and repaired when necessary. To assist with
the inspection you should use an inspection form. These checklists may be obtained from the
operator’s manual, the equipment manufacturer or created by you. The inspection checklist
should include all safety items such as lights, horn, brakes, backup alarms and seat belts.
Other items to include on the checklist are any moving parts, load supporting parts (mast,
chains, carriage), fluid levels, tires, steering, overhead guard, backrest and any other items
recommended by the manufacturer of the equipment.

Employees need to be properly trained to operate a forklift in a safe manor.
